Revisionist History in the Making

12 Jun

I know the pic below is just a Facebook post, but it’s illustrative of how American wingnuts revise history:

Seriously? The Berlin Wall was dismantled because a man who was literally losing his mind “shamed” the Soviets? I’m falling off my chair with laughter! I have no choice. If I don’t, I’ll either burst out in tears or yell in frustration.

The next thing we know, people will be naming airports and high schools after St. Ronnie, making pilgrimages to his ranch for healing, and consulting with Nancy’s astrologers to develop policy positions. Personally, I’m looking forward to seeing him make regular appearances on tree stumps, pancakes and shower stalls. That’s when we’ll know his canonization is complete.

If you want a real laugh, come to the realization that the man could not be elected dog catcher on a Republican ticket today. Now that’s funny sad.

That’s one of the reasons the wingnuts’ frequent invocation of his name is startling. They seem to revere some image of what they think he was, or should have been, like. Does that strike you as similar to the way Christians invoke the name of Jesus? They conjure some idea that has no resemblance to what the real guy could have been. After all, it’s a no-brainer that Jesus wasn’t a god or a son of a god. And Reagan wasn’t in today’s terms a “real Republican” either. Nor was he a particularly memorable president.

How can you say that, Chappy? He did it; it WAS him 40+ years of Cold War had absolutely nothing to do with it.

Or the internal weaknesses of the Communist bloc, for that matter. Wingnuts seem to prefer easy but specious answers to complex ones.

I might point out that while he is not yet appearing on tortillas, his simple minded politics (although, as the Chaplain and S. I. point out, an even mroe exteme version) totally dominate the discussion today (See how “liberal” President Hope N’ Change claims to worship the man).
