Vanity Fair/60 Minutes recently conducted a poll that yielded some interesting results:
If some religious believers think the world would be better off with no religion, shouldn’t they just quit and do their bit to make the world a better place?

Sure is cognitive dissonance in there.

That is a bit strange, isn’t it?
What’s kind of surprising to me is the high rate of approval of religious diversity. It’s also pretty telling that the Evangelicals are significantly the lowest in favoring that diversity.

That’s perfectly sensible. The response can be read as “I think the damage being done by other religions more than offsets the benefits from my religion.”
Remember, nobody ever thinks their own religion is bad. As Wittgenstein said: “If there were a verb meaning “to believe falsely,” it would not have any significant first person present indicative.”
(Kind of a pity he wasn’t able to take the next step from that idea and realize that the first person past participle would have been useful.)

I think it’s interesting that 15% of Catholics think we’d be better off with no religion. That says a lot, and I think it presents a wonderful potential source for atheists.
