An Entertaining Proposition

20 Dec

Th lack of commentary and innuendo in this One News Now post is atypical for that publication. It seems the editors decided to leave those tasks to the comment writers, who are taking up the task with gusto.

I think it would be fun if some of us joined the “conversation” over there. Since it’s likely that many of our comments won’t see the light of day, cross-post your comments or screenshots here. I promise not to delete them. Of course, you can still play here even if you don’t play over there. All I ask is that you play with someone, somewhere and let us know how it turns out.

I couldn’t find a place to comment over there. Just as well. The place creeped me out.

But it’s the same old same old. Keeton wants to force her Christian views onto gays (see the earlier story referenced in the article), but she and her Christian fellows don’t want anyone to even suggest to them that their views and their forcing their views on others is wrong. I really do think Christians must get very confused trying to figure out how to put their socks on in the morning.

Keeton wants to be a counselor. That’s a pretty open-shut case right there. For many private services, that would be…acceptable, for lack of a better word. But when you work in a science/medical field, which psychology is, you have to be held to a certain standard, & I am continually amazed that people do not get this. This would be like me trying to become a chaplain & saying I won’t work with Christian clients. If you can’t do your job, find another one.

I could find no comments either.

There was a case a couple of years ago where a Christian graduate student working for a biology degree refused to believe in evolution and felt victimized because his professor/administration weren’t willing to let him go on. Or he may have been working in a bio lab and got fired because he didn’t accept evolution. Kinda crimps your ability to do honest biology. I’m hazy on the details but that’s the gist of it. It gives credence to the evolutionary theory that Christians are born with important parts of their brains missing. Or the alternative theory that while born with all their brains in place, their parents remove the important parts. Or the other theory that they’re just stupid.

BTW I tend to subscribe to the last theory. It’s the simplest explanation.

Ric, I think most of us can be stupid now and then, but I know of no better way to institutionalize stupidity than to put a religion behind it. Does that make any sense?

Absolutely makes sense. If you choose to base your life on a known delusion, you can’t help but operate from a weakened intellect. Loyalty to a delusion refutes acceptance of reality.

What else can you do when you believe wholeheartedly in a book which goes against nature itself?

I’m baffled. It’s a tenet of Christian beliefs that we are all sinners. So why is it that gays are the one category of sinners that Christians get so freaked out about? They don’t want to counsel gays. They don’t want gays to serve in the military. In short, they want gays to either become straight or to curl up into a ball and die.

Tommykey, do you think people attack gays at least in part because gays are unlikely to beat the shit out of them? I mean, if the Christians were to put half the effort they put into gay-bashing into confronting the street gangs, I might not suspect their bashing gays was so likely motivated by cowardice.

Gays, unlike a myriad of other groups, threaten the patriarchal, gender-binary thinking that undergirds fundamentalist Christianity. It’s why they go after gays, feminists, and abortion with such ferocity but aren’t nearly as concerned about street gangs.

I think you just made a lot of sense out of their nonsense, Ahab.

Thanks for the heads-up, Chaplain! You inspired me to blog about it. I think Keeton is part of something we see over and over — someone claiming special privileges for themselves under the guise of being discriminated against for their Christian beliefs.

Hey, everyone! Thanks for commenting here. You’ve put me to shame.

Go take a look at Paul’s post. His response is right on target.

      “You’ve put me to shame.”

      Somebody had to do it.

One analogy I thought of is if an employee of fast food restaurant refused to serve obese customers. “Sorry, you can’t have this bacon double cheeseburger because you’re too fat.” Another would be a postal clerk refusing to carry mail addressed to or from Planned Parenthood. It’s really the reductio absurdum of these “conscience” objections.

Academia can be rather stupid sometimes, like having academic standards for admissions yet allowing exceptions for learning disabilities, so this is great news.

According to my image analysis software, Ms. Keeton’s makeup level has exceeded “trollop” and is nearly one third of the way to “hussy.” As such, I will pray for her eternal soul, but not until I get my whore-stoning outfit back from the cleaners…

Why is it that so many of these fundogelical moral freaks like Keeton are good looking? That’s got to be an argument for complete separation of mind and body, right?

Like the rich, the attractive often assume that these blessings are somehow deserved. This, of course, implies that those not so blessed had it coming as well. It is documented that a life absent hardship trends towards developing a conservative (read: authoritarian) outlook.

That, or their parents can pay for thousands of dollards in orthodontic work.

Jeez, I haven’t had a difficult life. Why aren’t I one of those good-looking, really bright, blessed humans with great dental work? Oh wait… yeah, of course – I’ve been cursed with a brain that wants to live in the real world. How silly of me to miss that detail!
