We all know that one of the primary tenets of scientific method is replication of results. I’m soliciting your assistance in performing a little experiment this weekend.
Part One – Explication/Demonstration of Experiment:
Part Two – Execution of Experiment:
Have A Happy Thanskgiving!

Well I’ve tried repeating the same thing more than three times in class and it’s still not remembered by some students.

I wonder if that theory works on atheists. Christians have told me hundreds of times that Jesus loves me, and I still can’t believe that a dead person who never did meet me can possibly love, or that I need the said love, for that matter.

With undergrads, it’s often the case that, even after one has said something three times, written it on the board three times, and stated it in the syllabus three times, at semester’s end, a substantial number of students will say, “But, you never told me this was important!”
Lorena:
Since you celebrated Thanksgiving several weeks ago and probably won’t be doing so again this weekend (especially with burnt fingers), maybe you can ponder this while I feast with my family: do Christians repeat their mantras so often because we need to hear them, or because they need to hear them?

I’d actually settle with that over “I never heard that before.”

Repetition is a major part of learning lines for a play. I just finished performing in The Mousetrap a couple of weeks ago, it was the twelfth show I’ve been in. Learning all the lines in the entire show is usually necessary and is usually mainly achieved by repetition. You go over and over and over the same things so many times that they become second nature. That way, when you’re performing, you don’t even think about what you’re saying or what you’re going to say next, you just say it.
It seems to me most religion is the same way, just keep going over the same things over and over until they’re second nature. Then whenever needed, they just come flowing out without even thinking about them.
The thing is, after the show ends, and the constant repetition stops, you gradually start losing that ability to just say it anymore, you have to actually think to remember a line.
I think that’s what happens in religion as well, thus the constant reminders.

In which case, the believers in affirmations for helping you, say, lose weight are right. If you keep telling yourself, “I love eating vegetables and fruits,” it will become second nature and you will actually lose weight by eating healthy food, will you?

Enjoy the day Chappy, and it looks like I owe you a beer – if you remember what that’s about. Hush, hush though… she doesn’t want to know until delivery day… Enjoy the day Chappy, and it looks like I owe you a beer – if you remember what that’s about. Amazingly it worked!
Or maybe it was just coincidence.
